The meeting was called to order at 11:31 a.m. by Tanya Franke, club president.

Minutes from the February meeting were approved.

Lesley Meier reported the account balance is $216.31.

Tanner Robertson reported that Cindy Blackwell and Amanda Erichsen turned in their Phoenix Award applications. He also reminded everyone to attend the upcoming thesis seminars if they can.

Ruth Bobbitt said the club Web site is still at http://aged.okstate.edu/agedgsa and to send her updates if anyone has any.

Eric Kennel gave the GPSGA report. He said the Phoenix Award applications were due yesterday; there were 14 master’s, 13 faculty, and 17 doctoral applications. GPSGA will be electing officers at the April 9 meeting. Funding applications for club funding are due April 15, and grad student appreciation week is in April. He said to watch for information about that as there will be some activities on campus for grad students.

Tanya informed the club that $15 was approved for Amanda Erichsen’s defense refreshments.

Amanda talked about the upcoming faculty/student social event. There were several faculty members and grad students interested in a softball game. Amanda moved to have an April 13 faculty/student softball-picnic extravaganza. The motion was seconded and passed. Tanya and Sheyenne Krysher volunteered to help Amanda with the planning.
There was quite a bit of discussion about how to arrange the food. The final decision was for the club to provide some desserts/snacks and drinks and encourage everyone to bring their own picnic if they wanted more of a meal. Tim Kock moved to spend up to $50 for the softball event. The motion passed.

Tanya reminded everyone the departmental reception is April 2 at 7 p.m. We need to RSVP. AgEd GSA will present awards to the outstanding master’s student, outstanding PhD student and outstanding faculty member. Members present nominated faculty candidates and voted. Mr. Ramsey was selected.
Sheyenne suggested the club establish criteria and possibly a revolving plaque for the awards if they are going to be an annual thing. She will look into plaque pricing.
Members present also discussed how to vote for and who should vote for the outstanding student awards. It was decided to give Bonnie a list of AgEd GSA members and the degrees they are pursuing. She can then distribute the list to faculty members and ask them to vote for one outstanding master’s student and one outstanding PhD student. Lesley and Tanner will take care of distributing the list and collecting votes from Bonnie.

Tanya said she would like the club to apply for some funding from GPSGA for next year. She suggested the application be for the revolving plaque and lunch for visiting grad students. Lesley added she would like to apply for funds to provide refreshments at the first and last meetings of the year. Lesley will complete the application, and Kellie will help if needed.

Sheyenne asked if there is an AgEd GSA logo. Tanya said there is not, and Amanda volunteered to come up with an idea.

Lesley moved to have ice cream and pizza at the next meeting. (as an end-of-the-year celebration). The motion passed.
Kellie moved to set a $60 budget for the ice cream and pizza. The motion passed.

GPSGA has made a lot of improvements in the last couple of months.
He said there is a new form for group funding, but no deadline has been set. Tanya Franke added that we need to think of a project that needs funded.

Amanda Erichsen talked about having a “students vs. faculty” softball game on April 13 or 27. She will e-mail faculty to get a feel for their interest and schedules.
Ruth suggested having a game and picnic for those who don’t want to play.

Tanner Robertson gave a report from the Phoenix Award Committee. He said they wanted to open it to all who would like to apply. So just let Tanner or Eric know if you are interested. He said there is a $750 award to the winner and they will interview three finalists.

The committee nominated a faculty candidate from each discipline in the department and opened the floor for further nominations. Shane Robinson, Cindy Blackwell and Shelly Sitton were nominated. Members present voted by secret ballot to nominate Cindy Blackwell.

Eric Kennel gave a report from the last GPSGA meeting. He said to look online for upcoming travel grant application deadlines. He also reported on some of the issues facing GPSGA as almost all of the officer team has resigned.

Eric and Kellie presented suggested updates and changes to the bylaws and constitution. The group provided feedback, and the revised suggestions will be voted on at the next meeting.

Tanya asked whether the group wants to change the adviser of Ag Ed GSA to match the department’s graduate coordinator. After some discussion, it was decided to add an item in the bylaws permitting review of the GSA adviser every two years with a nomination or application process.

The next meeting is Feb. 28, 2008. All future meetings will be moved forward one day (i.e., Thursday instead of Friday) because of the availability of 139 AgH.

November 30, 2007 (download .doc file)

The meeting was called to order at 12 p.m.

Lesley Meier gave the treasurer’s report. There is currently $226.31 in the Ag Ed GSA Account. She said there are twenty paid members as of today. Check with Lesley if you are not sure whether you paid.

Eric Kennel gave a report from the November GPSGA meeting. He said one of the biggest items being debated right now is whether to support changing the name of Murray Hall after the renovation is complete. He and Chance Owen plan to give their arguments at the next meeting. He also reminded the group to check the GPSGA Web site (http://gpsga.okstate.edu/travelgrant.php) for deadlines related to travel grants. Eric said the Orange Peel fee that was voted on earlier this week failed. He said that vote only represents students’ opinions, so it is still possible the fee will be established.

Eric reported that he has retyped the bylaws and constitution. The committee (Eric Kennel, Chance Owen, Kellie Strawn, Traci Naile) will meet before the next meeting to make corrections and additions. The changes will be approved by club members before they are finalized.

Kellie Strawn talked about the need to establish a reimbursement policy.  Members present agreed to let the bylaws committee come up with a draft of a policy as part of the updated bylaws.  Suggestions were made such as retaining dues money for large projects (e.g., travel grants for members), using dues money to provide refreshments for defense seminars or establishing a policy to get approval for reimbursement on a case-by-case basis before any purchase is made.

Kellie also brought up a couple important dates:

  • Jan. 1, 2008 – next IRB deadline for full board review
  • Jan. 18, 2008 – diploma application, revised plan of study, graduation clearance forms due to the graduate college for spring ’08 graduates.

Tuk reminded us about the baby shower for Dr. Robinson Dec. 13.

The members present discussed having an end-of-the-semester get together. Everyone decided to meet at the Texas Roadhouse Friday, Dec. 7 at 6:30 p.m. Please RSVP to Lesley (Lesley.lehenbauer@okstate.edu) by Wednesday, Dec. 5 if you plan to come so she can call ahead to get a table.

Tim Kock brought up a possible community service activity for the holidays. He said we can spend $20 to buy 50 chickens through Heifer International (http://www.heifer.org/).
Amanda Erichsen moved to buy 50 chickens to be paid for out of the dues money. Chris seconded the motion. The motion passed.

Tim will take care of the donation.

Mark your calendars for the next meeting, Jan. 25 at 12 p.m. in 439 AgH.

The meeting was adjourned at 12:30 p.m.

September 26, 2007 (download .doc file)

The meeting was called to order at 10:30 a.m.

Dr. Cartmell, graduate coordinator for the Department of Agricultural Education, Communications and Leadership, talked about important dates for graduate students to remember.

He said Bonnie has the graduate student handbooks in her office that list degree requirements and other important information.

Here are some of the highlights:

  • You need to choose and work closely with your graduate committee.
  • You should have your final plan of study, which needs to mirror your transcript, by the semester you graduate. Check the graduate college Web site for a check list of important dates and deadlines.
  • Diploma applications are due in the first couple weeks of the semester you graduate
  • Graduation clearance forms are also due early in the semester
  • Make copies of EVERYTHING for your records and give a copy to Bonnie for your file
  • The graduate college and university deadlines are FIRM, so stick to them. It if your responsibility to make sure you get everything done on time.

Dr. Cartmell also talked about selecting your committee. He said you need to find a committee chair who you are comfortable working with. Then select other members who can work well on a team.

Amanda Erichsen talked about the social activities that have been mentioned. Those include:

  • St. Jude Up Till Dawn. The deadline for this was early October.
  • Fall Social – Oct. 26. 6:30 at Chance and Eric’s house: 7100 N. Western. Costumes are encouraged, and Chance and Eric will send more info.
  • Pumpkin-painting/decorating at the next meeting.

Eric Kennel moved to paint donated pumpkins for faculty at the Oct. 31 meeting. The motion was seconded and passed.

Tanner will get pumpkins and everyone needs to bring some decorating supplies to share.

  • Nov 9 is a chili cook-off for United Way. Amy Taylor will head up the chili making.

Eric Kennel gave an update from the GPSGA meeting he and Chance attended.

He said GPSGA needs an updated list of paid GSA members with their names and e-mail addresses.

Eric also reminded everyone that students can request documents from the library – scanned articles or books you want to check out. They will send you information electronically, or have the book ready for you to check out.

GPSGA is looking for someone to write an article in the O’Colly about the organization. If anyone is interested, let Eric know.

EndNote is free from the library. You can get it on cd or download it from their Web site. Each student is allowed to put it on two computers. There are also EndNote training sessions held at the library. Check their Web site or contact Victor Baeza (at the library) for more info.

Eric also talked about applying to use the SGA suite during a football game.

If you are having tuition waiver problems, talk to GPSGA or contact Jodi Kennedy in the graduate college directly. She has been very helpful to those who have had questions!

SGA is passing a $15 fee to cover Orange Peel expenses, in addition to charging for tickets. The fee will be assessed to all students. GPSGA is fighting the measure.

Lesley Lehenbauer reminded us we have only $26.31 in our account and need to discuss dues. In the past they have been $10 for a lifetime membership, but there hasn’t been consistent record keeping to track who has paid.

Amanda Erichsen moved that we pay $10 per school year by the October meeting for membership dues, including those who have already paid the previous lifetime dues.

Chance seconded the motion.

The motion passed, which means dues are due at the Oct. 31 meeting.

Topics for the next meeting include:

  • Establishing a Phoenix Award Committee and list of those who plan to graduate in May.
  • Deciding whether to elect a President-elect.

The meeting was adjourned at 11:25 a.m.
