About the Agricultural Leadership Major

Option Requirement Sheet

A major in Agricultural Leadership is offered through the department of Agricultural Education, Communications and Leadership. One hundred twenty hours are required, including 58 hours in major requirements and 18 hours in controlled electives.

Major requirements include AGLE 1511, 2303, 3101, 3303, 3403, 4203, and 4300.
Students are required to take the professional development series (AGLE 3101, AGLE 4203, and AGLE 4300) in the following order:

AGLE 3101 - Introduction to Leadership
A one-credit hour course designed to introduce students to agricultural leadership. Specific topics include authentic leadership, independent thinking, commitment to agriculture, open minds and professionalism (fall semester)

AGLE 4203 - Professional Development in Agriculture
The course seeks to prepare students for the workplace through the creation of an intense team environment designed to encourage independent thinking and professionalism. Students will learn presentation skills, develop portfolios and practice interviewing. (fall or spring semester) syllabus

AGLE 4300 - Agricultural Leadership: Internship
All Agricultural Leadership students are required to secure and participate in a full-time 10-week internship experience. (fall, spring, or summer semester) syllabus

Although the following courses do not have prerequisites, it is recommended by faculty that students take the following leadership courses as sequenced below:

AGLE 1511 - Introduction to Leadership
A one-credit hour freshman level course designed to introduce students to the field of leadership. Application to student organization is encouraged. (fall or spring semester) syllabus

AGLE 2303 - Personal Leadership Development
This course allows students to explore their personal values system as it applies to leadership. Specific topics include: vision, values, balance, self-awareness and the leadership context. (fall or spring semester) syllabus

AGLE 3303 - Agricultural Leadership: Theory and Practice
Leadership theory and application to organizations is the theme. Students also learn about motivation, power and group dynamics. (fall or summer semester) syllabus

AGLE 3403 - Agricultural Agencies and Information Transfer
The foundation of the Ag Agencies course includes change theory, diffusion of innovation and mediums of communication. (spring semester only) syllabus

The major requires 23 hours of controlled electives. Students should work with their advisors to create a plan for their controlled electives. Students interested in taking additional leadership courses as controlled electives may enroll in advanced leadership courses (AGLE 3333, 4101, 4303) after completing AGLE 2303 and AGLE 3303.

AGLE 3333 - Contemporary Issues in Leadership
Prerequisites: AGLE 2303 and 3303. Students explore leadership through the writings of current theorists in leadership. (fall semester only) syllabus

AGLE 4101 - Seminar in Leadership Education
Prerequisites: AGED 2303 and 3303. A one-credit hour junior level course designed to provide an in-depth study of a particular topic in the study of leadership behavior. (spring semester only) syllabus

AGLE 4303 - Facilitating Leadership Education Programs
Prerequisites: AGED 2303 and 3303. This capstone course prepares students to conduct leadership training in and out of the classroom. (spring semester only) syllabus

Refer to the option sheets below for a complete list of requirements. Students should select their requirement sheet based upon the first academic year in which they were enrolled (or plan to enroll) in the Agricultural Leadership major. Students formerly enrolled as an Agricultural Education-Leadership and Service option are eligible to move to the 2005-06 Agricultural Leadership Requirement Sheet.
