Dear 4-H Educators, Members, Volunteers and Parents,

Once again we thank all of the Extension educators and 4-H volunteers who helped make the 86th State 4-H Roundup a success. Congratulations to Jerret Sanders and Carrie Highfill, the new Hall of Fame winners and to Jerret, the new state 4-H president. Congratulations also to the other new members of the state and district officer teams and state ambassadors.

As we look toward summer more state events are on the horizon. The Parent and Volunteer Conference, Livestock Judging Camp, and Animal Science Field Days are just a few of the coming opportunities for staff, volunteers and youth.

You have no doubt seen enrollment information for the State Parent and Volunteer Leadership Conference and information about the scholarship program for first time attendees; I encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity. Remember this conference is planned for educators and volunteers alike.

Summer is also a good time to update your charter club information and double check all EINs for clubs. There are new laws going into effect which will require all small non-profit and tax exempt groups to file a report at least annually. We are not yet sure how this process will work, as National 4-H Headquarters is working with the IRS on this matter; however, we are fairly confident we will need to have current identification information for all clubs, so keeping your charter information current will help you be prepared. Judy Talley in our office keeps this file up to date for each county, so if you need to know if your clubs are on record, give Judy a call at 405-744-8891.

Sincerely,

Charles Cox
Interim Assistant Director, 4-H Youth Development

Free magazine subscription offered

The National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) is offering FREE subscription to JAKES/Xtreme JAKES (Juniors Acquiring Knowledge Ethics and Sportsmanship) Magazine to all shooting sports and wildlife conservation 4-H members while funding lasts.  This quarterly publication comes with a free membership to the JAKES or Xtreme JAKES program and is loaded with articles about wildlife, conservation, the shooting sports and the great outdoors.  The magazine includes information about academic scholarships and chances to win conservation contests and prizes!  This would be a great way to supplement and enhance your county 4-H shooting sports and wildlife conservation programs.

If you are interested in signing your 4-H members up for these great benefits, please visit the NWTF Jakes website at http://www.nwtf.org/jakes/educators/partners.html.

Welcome new curriculum specialist

We are pleased to welcome Cathy Allen to the Oklahoma 4-H program.  Cathy will begin her new assignment in the state 4-H office on July 9. Cathy has worked for 16 years in Extension in Illinois and Missouri.  She has been involved in the development of some of the materials that your county may already be using that were developed by the 4-HCCS, as the north central region was very involved in the earliest efforts of developing materials for the nation. Cathy is currently serving as family financial education specialist in the South Central Region of Missouri. In addition to working with teams to update and develop 4-H curriculum materials, Cathy will serve as one of the advisors to the 4-H Ambassador program.

Oklahoma Geospatial Institute

Attached is a form and information regarding the 'Oklahoma 4-H Geospatial Institute.' This information is particularly relevant for counties participating in the Geospatial Initiative Team or those that have an interest in community mapping projects. These projects are ideal for teams of youth and adults involved in the Environmental Impact Team or the Leadership and Community Impact Team.

By participating in the program county teams have an opportunity to receive $400 in program funds and an additional $200 as a teacher stipend.

The institute will be held August 2-3 at OSU. If you have questions give me a call at 405-744-8885, or send an email.
